Patience Jonathan Calls for Peace in Rivers State, Warns Against Tenure Overstay

Patience Jonathan, wife of former President Goodluck Jonathan, delivered a compelling plea for peace in Rivers State during a colloquium marking the 60th anniversary of the Nigeria Institute of Public Relations (NIPR) on Thursday.

Addressing the gathering under the theme ‘Public Relations, Value Reorientation, and Economic Transformation,’ the former first lady expressed grave concern over the ongoing crisis in Rivers State, particularly in the aftermath of local government elections.

Highlighting the potential dangers of political tension, she emphasized the importance of adhering to constitutional limits for elected officials. “It is crucial for elected officials to respect the constitution and refrain from clinging to power beyond their mandated tenure,” Patience Jonathan stated, noting the detrimental effects of such actions on peace and development.

“As someone deeply invested in the welfare of Rivers State, I urge all parties involved to prioritize peace. Sustainable development can only thrive in an atmosphere of stability,” she added.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s democratic journey, Patience Jonathan clarified her stance during the aftermath of the 2015 presidential election, affirming that she did not advocate for her husband to contest the outcome. She praised Goodluck Jonathan for his peaceful transfer of power, which she described as a model of democratic leadership.

The political crisis in Rivers State has escalated in recent months, pitting Governor Siminalayi Fubara against his predecessor, Nyesom Wike. The dispute has divided the Rivers State Assembly into two factions, each claiming legitimacy. This power struggle has spilled over into local government affairs, resulting in disputes over office tenures in the state’s 23 LGAs.

The legal battles and administrative standoffs underscore the challenges facing governance in Rivers State, prompting calls from various quarters for dialogue and adherence to legal processes to resolve the impasse.
