Clarke: Scotland are ‘still alive’ in Euro 2024 after ‘good team performance’

Euro 2024 has got off to a flying start, with drama, great games and goals aplenty.

We are now entering the business end of the group stages, and most teams still have a chance of making it into the last 16.

With so much still to play for, and with the four best third-placed sides also progressing to the knockout stages, it can all get a little bit confusing.

So sit back and relax while we explain which teams have qualified for the knockout stages, who England could face in the last 16 and what happens to the best third-placed sides.

Which teams have qualified for the knockout stages?

Tournament hosts Germany became the first side to secure their place in the knockout stages of Euro 2024 with a 2-0 win over Hungary.

The defeat saw Scotland crash out at the group stage, while Hungary will have to wait and see if third place will be enough to take them through.

A dramatic late equaliser meant Italy progressed as runners-up, while Croatia must wait to see if they can reach the knockouts as one of the best third-place teams. With just two points, this outcome is mathematically possible but very unlikely.

Albania exited the tournament following their defeat to Spain with just one point.

The result means that England top the group on five points whilst Denmark - who drew 0-0 with Serbia - finished second and Slovenia a guaranteed qualifier into the knockouts in third.

Austria will now face the runner-up from Group F whilst France will have to face the runner-up from Group E. Meanwhile the Dutch will either play Spain, the winner from Group C or the winner from Group E.

It will be a straight shoot-out for a place in the round of 16 when Slovakia take on Romania and Ukraine come up against Belgium on Wednesday.

The winners of each match will directly qualify for the knockouts, with goal difference determining which team finishes top or as runners-up.

If one match finishes as a draw, one of the teams involved will still finish as runner-up depending on goal difference. The other team could still progress as one of the best third-placed teams.

If both matches finish as a draw, the final group standings will be determined by head-to-head record, then goal difference, then goals scored.

If the standings are still level, the next determinant will be a penalty shoot-out if the teams in question are playing each other in the final group game. Otherwise, the standings will be decided by best discipline and then European qualifiers ranking.

Portugal will progress into the last 16 as Group F winners following their 3-0 victory against Turkey, who need just one point against the Czech Republic on Wednesday to also reach the knockouts.

Georgia and the Czech Republic still have a chance to book a place in the last 16 after their 1-1 draw.

The Czech Republic can progress by beating Turkey and if Georgia fail to beat Portugal.

But if Georgia also beat Portugal, the runners-up spot will go down to goal difference with the Czech Republic. In that scenario, the team with the inferior goal difference could also progress as a best third-place side.

If Turkey defeat the Czech Republic, Georgia could still progress as one of the best third-place teams with a victory.

Draws for Georgia and the Czech Republic in their final group matches will likely see them knocked out of the tournament.

Who will England face in the last 16?

As winners of Group C, England will face one of the best third-placed sides from Group D, Group E or Group F.

That could be the Netherlands from Group D, but the third-place teams from Groups E and F are not known yet.

Romania, Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine are all tied on three points from two games heading into the final round of Group E fixtures on Wednesday at 5pm.

However, the identity of England's opponents ultimately depends on the games in Group F, which kick off at 8pm on Wednesday.

Turkey, the Czech Republic and Georgia can all still seal third spot, and if they do so while finishing with at least three points, would eliminate Hungary and take their place as one of the four-best third-place teams.

The bottom line is that England will play the Dutch, unless the Czechs claim victory over Turkey or Georgia win against Portugal.

Although, the main bit of good news for England and their fans is that they are now in the opposite side of the draw from Germany, France, Spain and Portugal.

What happens to the best third-placed sides?

The four best third-placed sides will progress through the knockout stages of Euro 2024.

The best third-placed sides are ranked on the points they picked up in their group, but in the case of a draw it will be decided by goal difference and then goals scored.
