Russian weapons experts say they have discovered key secrets about Britain’s devastating Storm Shadow missiles that have proven to be a thorn in Russia's side.

They showed how they have taken apart and examined downed or misfiring missiles deployed by the Ukrainian army in the war. The knowledge will help defend against a missile that has caused major damage to Vladimir Putin’s armed forces, they claim.

The long-range Storm Shadow is jointly developed by Britain and France, where it is known as SCALP. It has a range of up to 350 miles and has caused devastating damage to Vladimir Putin’s forces. Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti showed a 98-second video with an anonymous missile expert telling views about the Storm Shadow.

Russian state media outlet RIA Novosti showed a 98-second video with an anonymous missile expert telling views about the Storm Shadow.

“This is the primary shaped charge of the Storm Shadow or SCALP missile,” he said. “It has a cap at the front, then the primary charge, followed immediately by the main penetrating warhead. This is necessary for the initial penetration of the obstacle, as the missile is a bunker killer."

He explained: “It makes a hole due to the cumulative effect, where the inertial warhead penetrates and produces an explosion inside.”

After examining the missile, the Russians say they understand “the depth of penetration, the range of operation from the surface, that is, the target sensors that are used and what depth is possible to penetrate this missile. We already know how deep the shelter should be in order to provide protection against this type of missile.”

A video from May shows how Russian air defences exploded an incoming Storm Shadow - something they claim their new knowledge of the missiles will make easier. Footage from February this year showed how the Storm Shadow missile sped towards a Belbek military airport in occupied Crimea, with Russian air defences too slow to down it, and the subsequent explosion.

Shocked Russian troops were seen watching and cursing close to their mobile S-400 air defence missile launchers. Separate videos showed the massive explosion and fire when a Storm Shadow hit the Russian landing ship Novocherkassk in the port of Feodosia in Crimea.
