Thanks to the John Wick franchise, Stahelski is now well-renowned for his action movie prowess, and Highlander is expected to continue to demonstrate the director’s particular set of skills. Continuing his conversation with Collider, Stahelski called the Highlander reboot “another opportunity” to do what he loves.

"It’s another opportunity to do a property that I love. I love what it's about, I love working with immortality and love stories through time. I think it's a good way to take a great period piece, and sci-fi, and mix them together."

Henry Cavill Will Lead the Highlander Reboot

Man of Steel and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare star Henry Cavill will lead the Highlander reboot, and has revealed that the movie will delve much “deeper” into the lore of the immortal warriors than any previous iteration of the franchise. Describing himself as a “Highlander fan,” the actor is excited to explore the story and take things much further than just “a cool guy with a cool sword.”

“I’m gonna have to answer that very carefully. I was a Highlander fan. They were great fun movies. Obviously, I watched them when I was a lot younger, and since rewatched. But also the TV show. I really enjoyed the lore behind it. That sort of sense of a tragic warrior, with more of a story to tell than just a cool guy with a cool sword doing cool things. And this goes even deeper into that.”

Henry Cavill made a suprise appearance at CinemaCon, and used the opportunity to tease his upcoming reboot of the fantasy franchise.

The Highlander reboot is expected to follow a similar plot to the 1986 original, which follows swordsman Connor MacLeod as he discovers that he is one of a number of immortal warriors who can be killed only by beheading. After living somewhat peacefully for several centuries, MacLeod settles in New York City and is soon dragged back onto the battlefield when his greatest enemy returns to kill him and thus obtain "the Prize.”

The Highlander reboot now has a release date window of 2026. The original 1986 movie Highlander can currently be streamed on Prime Video.
