Klinsmann gives Southgate a tactical tip: "I think England have to surprise the Swiss"

The English national team is in the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 but is being heavily criticized for its style of play. Jurgen Klinsmann believes that Gareth Southgate should change his tactics.

"I think England need to surprise the Swiss and try something different. And that could be a good old 4-4-2."

From Klinsmann's point of view, Southgate should rely on a double leadership of Harry Kane and Ivan Toney: "I think it could work and if Gareth sees it that way too, he should do it. That's the time when, as a coach, you have to trust your gut feeling in a tournament and never shy away from unpopular decisions."

According to Klinsmann, the "Three Lions" will face "the best Swiss team of all time" and the 59-year-old is expecting a real drama again, perhaps as dramatic as the rollercoaster of emotions on Sunday against the Slovakians.

Klinsmann thinks the criticism of Southgate is somewhat exaggerated: "England did not play well, but they did not stop believing in themselves, they did not stop working. People underestimate how difficult it can be to overcome teams that park the bus."
