WASHINGTON, DC: President Joe Biden underscored the stakes of the 2024 election, warning that a second Donald Trump administration would undo the climate actions taken by his administration during a press briefing on Tuesday, July 2. 

Speaking at the federal Emergency Operations Center in Washington, DC, the incumbent announced the introduction of the first federal extreme-heat standards for workers. These new protections include mandatory access to shade and water for workers exposed to extreme heat and require employers to develop emergency response plans.

The president took the opportunity to criticize pro-Trump GOP congressmen for their unanimous opposition to the Inflation Reduction Act and for downplaying the significance of climate change.

He pointed out that former President Trump has falsely referred to climate change as a "hoax."

While most leading Republicans do not outright deny the existence of climate change, they have advocated for reversing the Biden administration's climate policies and have resisted efforts to transition away from fossil fuels, which are the main contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.

"Unfortunately, my predecessor and the MAGA Republicans in Congress are trying to undo all this progress," said Biden, adding, "They still deny climate change even exists. They must be living in a hole somewhere, at the expense of the health and safety of their own constituents."

President Biden further stated, "I quite frankly think it’s not only outrageous, it’s really stupid. Everyone who willfully denies the impacts of climate change is condemning the American people to a dangerous future. They’re either really, really dumb, or has some other motive … how can you deny there’s climate change?"

The introduction of the federal extreme-heat standards for workers coincides with record temperatures impacting large parts of the US. Although the administration has been considering the protections since 2021, the proposal was officially announced only on Tuesday.

Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics reveals that between 2011 and 2021, extreme heat exposure resulted in the deaths of 436 workers.

While Biden tried to caution Americans about the perils posed by climate change, Trump's supporters and other netizens weren't happy with him attacking the GOP presidential candidate and congressional Republicans who support him. 

One expressed, "Climate change is real! The political climate, that is. And ol' Scranton Joe is definitely feeling the heat!" and another wrote, "The guy doesn't know what day it is, but he knows the climate changes...daily."

A person quipped, "Climate changes, nobody's denying that fact,"  while someone else declared, "Climate change is a Democrat hoax."

"Trump’s clean air policies had better results than yours and he spent billions less!" expressed an individual.
