John Dramani Mahama, the flagbearer of Ghana’s National Democratic Congress (NDC), has assured that he will enhance the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) rather than abolish it if he wins the upcoming presidential elections.

Addressing journalists in Accra on Sunday, Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to combating corruption by bolstering the OSP, established in 2018 as an independent anti-corruption institution aligned with international standards under the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC).

The OSP’s mandate includes:

  • Investigating and prosecuting cases of alleged corruption in both public and private sectors.
  • Recovering illicit proceeds.
  • Implementing measures to prevent corruption.

Mahama clarified, “I have no intentions of scrapping the OSP. Instead, I plan to introduce measures and allocate resources to strengthen its operations.”

Furthermore, he outlined his administration’s proposal to establish an independent office dedicated to evaluating government procurements exceeding a $5 million threshold or as recommended by Parliament. This initiative forms part of his broader strategy to enhance transparency and accountability in public sector spending.

Mahama’s remarks underscore his commitment to combatting corruption and instituting robust mechanisms to ensure good governance and accountability in Ghana.
