Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, has called on foreign companies and investors to adhere to Nigerian labour laws in line with international best practices while conducting business in the country.

Kalu made this statement on Monday while hosting a delegation from the Qingdao Municipal Council, China, led by Mr. Wang Luming, Chairman of the Standing Committee of Qingdao Municipal People’s Congress.

Kalu highlighted Qingdao as a significant player in China’s shipbuilding and construction industries, emphasizing the longstanding diplomatic ties between Nigeria and China and their successful collaborations on issues of mutual interest.

In a statement released on Monday by Levinus Nwabughiogu, Chief Press Secretary to the Deputy Speaker, Kalu emphasized the importance of compliance with labour laws, noting that some foreign companies in Nigeria have not been adhering to these regulations. “It’s important to comply with the labour laws.

As we have more companies coming to Nigeria, we are strict with compliance with our laws,” Kalu stated.

“We have observed that some of the companies that are working in Nigeria are not complying with our labour laws, particularly in taking care of those working for them.”

Kalu also expressed the House’s commitment to engaging in dialogue with its Chinese counterparts for mutual benefit.

“The House of Representatives is eager to engage in meaningful discussions with the Qingdao Municipal People’s Congress as part of the core engagements toward actualizing the House’s eight-point legislative agenda, especially through business and investment-friendly legislative frameworks and oversight,” he said.

He added that such cooperation could unlock future mutual benefits, enhance understanding of shared interests, strengthen economic partnerships, and facilitate opportunities for Qingdao enterprises in Nigeria. “By working together, we can build the infrastructure Nigeria needs to thrive.

From top-notch home appliances to reliable tyres and delectable processed foods, Qingdao’s manufacturing muscle presents a wealth of opportunities.

Imagine factories humming in Nigeria, producing these goods or even becoming export hubs to the rest of Africa,” Kalu remarked.

Earlier, Mr. Wang Luming stated that the Qingdao delegation aimed to synergize with the Nigerian government in areas such as technology, vocational education, and talent training to address unemployment in the country.
