In a world that is filled with darkness, believers are to be the lights; shining through darkness to lead people not only to safety, but to the arms of Jesus Christ. We are called to be lights to a world struggling against physical and spiritual forces like never before. Matthew 5, the Greek word used, ‘Phos’ means to shine or make manifest, clear, plain and apparent. Being a light as a child of God means that you will not partake in evil anywhere it is being done, rather, your life should point people to Jesus Christ. Peter tells us: “But you are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light,” (I Pet. 2:9).

Darkness symbolises the absence of God, that is why the very first thing that God did during creation, according to the book of Genesis, is to bring light. To be saved, you must come into the light of God and then you begin to walk in the light of God.
Walking in the light is walking with God with the understanding that He is your Master and you do what that pleases Him. You cannot say that you have fellowship with God when you do not practice the truth. Bible says in James 1:22, be doers of the word, and not hearers only. If you say you are a child of God, your lifestyle must agree with the scripture.You have to put off the old man with his deeds, and put on the new man who is renewed in knowledge of God.

Christians are lights of the world, while believers are called ‘sons of Light.’ The Christian goal is to please God and to do those things that will glorify Him. Believers are called to send the light to every corner of the world. They are to go out to reach the unsaved and rescue lost souls. There are souls to rescue and there are souls to save and we must send the light out to reach the unreached. We must shine as light by standing out in the world.

To shine as a light, Christian must lead a life that is distinct from the ways of the world, by exhibiting traits of transformation (John 17:11). Your life as a believer should radiate love to the people around. Love seeks opportunity to do good to all men, and especially in the household of the faith. Spread love everywhere you go; first of all in your own house. Give love to your children, to your spouse and your neighbours. Let no one come to you without leaving a better and happier person. A Christian can make his light to shine by being the living expression of God’s kindness (Gal 6:10).

To be able to let your light shine as a Christian, believers must be bold. There is no room to be shy whether you are timid or outgoing; you are called to be light to the people around you. Believers are not called to be the light of the church only, but also of the world. Hence, to shine in the world, believer must be bold to have an influence in the world. Christians must let their light shine everywhere and every time. You should be careful of what you say as a Christian. What you say can either influence people positively or negatively.The purpose of our conversation is to build people up, and make them better.Col 4:6, says: “Let your speech be always with grace.
