Israeli police deploy special anti-terror unit to suppress prisoner release protests
ALBAWABA - The Israeli police have sent out an elite, specialized team to handle the continuing demonstrations in Jerusalem, according to Yedioth Ahronoth. The demand of these protests is the liberation of Israeli prisoners detained in Gaza.
The special squad, which is usually responsible with stopping major crimes like terrorist attacks, has been given the mission of infiltrating and managing the demonstrations. The publication said that the unit made an effort to enlist demonstrators to serve as informants during the protests, which have been demanding the release of the inmates and the resignation of the administration.
According to reports, these unit's members pretended to be protesters. Later, in the middle of the demonstrations, they were seen conducting hurried arrests.
The relatives of Israeli prisoners have intensified their rallies in recent weeks, calling on the authorities to arrange a prisoner swap and enforce a ceasefire. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has persisted in his desire to see the war through, despite their best efforts. This is seen by some as a ploy to hold onto power.
