Empowering New Mainers: Hope Acts Provides Free English Classes for Integration and Success

apexlifehub.com 1 day ago

In a bid to foster integration and success for new Mainers, Hope Acts, a non-profit organization based in Portland, offers a comprehensive English-language program free of charge. The initiative has garnered recognition from the State, receiving the prestigious Governor's Service Award for its impactful contributions.

Empowering Through Language

At the core of Hope Acts is the Hope House English Language Program, a dedicated team of volunteer English teachers and tutors who selflessly dedicate thousands of hours annually to assist asylum seekers and other new Mainers in learning English. With close to 300 students enrolled in remote classes conducted via Zoom and WhatsApp, the program has successfully taught English to approximately 1000 individuals since its inception in 2016.

Community Integration in Action

Despite the virtual nature of the classes, the program goes beyond conventional teaching methods. Volunteer teachers and adult students engage in various outings together, visiting cultural sites such as the Portland Museum of Art, the Portland Observatory, and the local library. Program Manager, Sarah Gauvin, emphasizes the significance of these excursions, stating, "They’re kind of armored with English that they can use and speak with native speakers out in the community. It builds their confidence and builds their sense of belonging here in Southern Maine."

Success Stories

One such success story is Norberto Balolagui, a recent immigrant from Angola who joined the program a year ago. Balolagui attests to the practical application of the skills acquired in class, sharing how he confidently communicates with healthcare professionals and patients at his job in a local hospital. Reflecting on his progress, Balolagui expresses, "A lot of words I didn’t know, but now when I hear people talking, now I know some words. It’s very important."

Empowering individuals through language acquisition, Hope Acts continues to serve as a beacon of hope and opportunity for new Mainers striving for integration and success in their new home.
