28 plants generate 2,760GWh of electricity in June

Port Harcourt — 28 grid-connected electricity generation plants across the country generated a total of 2,760 Gigawatt-hour, GWh, of electricity in June 2024, a decline from 3,171GWh generated in May 2024.

According to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, NERC, the 28 grid-connected power plants recorded only a 33 percent availability factor in the month under review, even when they have an installed capacity of generating 13,371MW.

Data released by NERC on the operational performance of power plants indicated that the largest power producers, which include Egbin ST, Delta GS, Kanji, Shell’s Afam VI, Zungeru, Odukpani, Shiroro, Jebba, Okpai, Azura IPP, and Geregu plants, generated only 2,227GWh, which represents 80.7percent of the energy generated in June 2024.

Smaller plants, including Afam IV -V, Sapele ST, Olorunsogo NIPP, Omotosho NIPP, Sapele GT NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP, Geregu NIPP, Omotosho, Olorunsogo, Ibom Power, River NIPP, Omoku, Trans Amadi, Paras, Taopex Energy, Mepp and Dadin Kowa, generated a total of 533GWh being 19.3 percent of energy generated during the period.

Egbin ST and Zungeru plants generated the highest power of 478GWh and 321GWh, while Azura IPP trailed behind with 275 GWh in June 2024, while Alaoji NIPP, Ihovbor NIPP and Omotosho NIPP generated zero GWh of electricity, from their installed capacity of 472MW, 450MW and 500MW respectively.

NERC further disclosed that 4,391 GWh was the average available capacity from these 28 power plants in June 2024.
