Hearts Break Over What Grandma Tells Granddaughter Before She Gets on Plane

sacbee.com 1 day ago

Following a memorable week together, a woman shared the bittersweet comment her grandma made and it's left the internet in tears.

Every year, Kaitlyn Nemunaitis, 31, spends one or two weeks visiting her grandmother in Florida, and they fill their time doing everything from traveling to the beach, going out for food, and of course, doing some shopping.

But this time, before Nemunaitis boarded her flight back to Denver, Colorado, her 87-year-old grandma "apologized for being old," and for not being able to do as many things. This devastated Nemunaitis, who told Newsweek that she "cried the entire plane ride home" because she didn't want her grandma to think that it hadn't been the most wonderful week together.

"This year, I actually had the whole week off work, and we spent the entire time together. We didn't do much-went out to lunch, put together a puzzle, watched TV, talked, and I cooked," she said.

"It was nice to go cheer her up and just spend time with each other. I think she felt bad when she dropped me off because she knows that I'm a very active person, but at this stage in her life, she could hardly walk more than 10 minutes on the beach due to her neuropathy. When she apologized for her age, I absolutely lost it."

It may not have been the most jam-packed week, but it was perfect nonetheless, and Nemunaitis has loved developing a much stronger bond with her grandma as she'd gotten older. She sadly lost her mom in 2023 to cancer, so now her grandma is "the closest thing to a mom" for Nemunaitis, and she cherishes every moment they have together.

"I didn't care that we weren't doing much. I just truly enjoyed her company and being there for her. I am not blind to the fact that every goodbye could be our last, and I don't want her to ever feel like doing nothing with her is a waste of time," she said.

Grandparents can play a pivotal role in many of our lives, and that fact is not lost on Nemunaitis. According to a recent poll by YouGov, 69 percent of Americans feel it's very important for grandparents and grandchildren to have a close relationship, and 39 percent say their grandparents have been very influential in their lives.

After her grandma told her, "Sorry I'm so old and couldn't do much," Nemunaitis shared the poignant moment on TikTok (@kaitnem). Since being posted on April 17, the touching clip has already gained over 4.4 million views and more than 687,000 likes.

Nemunaitis has been blown away by the positive response on social media, and she hopes it encourages many people to reach out and connect with their elderly relatives, too.

"I have been completely shocked by how many people were touched by my video. I'm so glad that my video inspired people to call their grandmas because I can't imagine what life would have been like if I never discovered the connection I have with mine," she said.

"When I was younger, I had a hard time connecting with her in all honesty, but as I got older and got to know her, I realized that she's literally a carbon copy of me. We have so much in common and she is such a fun, vibrant spirit and truly a best friend to me."

Nemunaitis may not get to visit her grandma as frequently as she'd like, but the vacations they do get together are some of the best memories she has, and she will never take them for granted.

"Moral of the story, call your grandma if and when you can," she told Newsweek.

The viral TikTok video has touched many hearts and left many people in tears, leading to more than 3,500 comments already. One social media user wrote, "Grandmas are the most precious thing in the world."

Another person commented: "Enjoy and savor every second. I miss my grandma so much. I wish grandmas knew how special they are."

"I'm not crying you are," wrote one commenter.
