The Lagos State Government has apologised to residents and commuters over Wednesday’s floods, occasioned by heavy rainfall, which affected different parts of the state.

The Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, issued the apology on Thursday during an interview on Channels Television, monitored by THE WHISTLER.

“I will start by saying to Lagosians, ‘We are sorry for the inconvenience caused due to nature’s cause yesterday morning,” Wahab said.

THE WHISTLER reported Wednesday that the downpour, which lasted for about 10 hours, affected areas such as Eredo, Bojije, Epe, Sangotedo, Ibeju-Lekki, Awoyaya, Labora, and Abijon.

Other areas affected include Iyana-Oworo, Agege, Ijegun-Isheri Osun and Gbagada.

The flood grounded vehicular movement on the roads, and led to the collapse of a two-storey building in the Mushin area of the state.

Some residents had criticized the government for failing to plan, so as to mitigate the floods, considering that Lagos is a coastal state.

But Wahab explained that the floods were not due to lack of planning on the part of the state government, but as a result of natural circumstances.

“It’s not for failure to plan that we had what happened yesterday,” the commissioner said.

“No, it was nature taking its full course. And we are sorry for those whose lives were disrupted: they could not go to work, they could not go to their marketplaces, they couldn’t go to school.”

According to him, emergency teams have been deployed across the affected areas.

“Emergency teams were on the ground since around 4am. I’ve been up since around 4am. yesterday,” Wahab stated.
