Many Netflix subscribers will have to pay more to not see ads

Netflix subscribers will now have to pay an extra £3 a month to not see ads while streaming content.

The streaming giant previously got rid of its 'Basic' subscription plan for new customers last year. However, now existing customers previously subscribed to the plan will be moved on to the 'Standard with adverts' subscription.

Customers on the Standard with adverts plan will now only pay £4.99 a month, compared to the basic £7.99 a month - a total saving of £3 a month. However, the cheaper price will mean that subscribers will have to watch prior to and while they're watching they're content.

While Netflix is already in the process of implementing the change, a solid deadline for when all UK subscribers will be switched over has not yet been confirmed.

An extra £3 a month to not watch ads

If former Basic subscribers want to continue not seeing ads on Netflix, they will have to upgrade to the 'Standard' plan which costs £10.99 a month. Overall, this would result in an extra £3 a month, or £36 a year, compared to the old Basic plan's cost.

Otherwise, customers could choose to opt in for the Premium plan, which costs £17.99 a month and allows up to four devices to stream content at the same time without ads. On top of this, the premium plan allows content to streamed in 4K and HDR, compared to the 1080p quality of Standand and Standard with advards.

While many customers may be happy with dealing with a few ads while watching Netflix, it's important to note that the streaming platform said some shows and movies will not be available on the plan.

Save money by splitting the cost in your household

If more than one person in your household has their own Netflix subscription, you may be able to split the costs of a Standard or Premium plan between each other. If there are only two people in the household, you can get away with the Standard plan that allows you to split streaming between two devices at the same time while only paying around £5.50 each and saving £65 a year.

If there are at least three people in the household, you can split the premium plan at £17.99 a month while only paying £4.50 a month each.
