Ohio’s Animal Protective League Rescues 184 Neglected Animals

The Portage County Animal Protective League (APL) in Ohio led a major rescue operation on June 26, saving over 180 animals suffering from dire conditions. The rescue included a variety of animals such as horses, miniature horses, a donkey, cows, goats, sheep, pigs, dogs, cats, rabbits, guinea pigs, turtles, tortoises, and numerous birds.

Animals Found in Unsanitary Conditions

According to the Portage APL, the animals were living in filthy environments without proper food or water. Executive Director Chalan Lowry said, “All the animals were living in unsanitary, filthy conditions without appropriate food… Many animals were visibly underweight.” In some cases, animals resorted to eating tree bark due to severe malnutrition.

Whispering Acres’ Commitment

Many rescued animals were sent to Whispering Acres Farm Animal Sanctuary. Founder Janine Smalley recounted the devastating condition of these animals and mentioned that recovery might take months. She stated, “There really was a giant need to get the farm animals into a loving, caring home.” Whispering Acres took in four goats, two horses, and two sheep for critical care.

Ongoing Needs and Support

The Portage APL emphasized the need for community support to aid ongoing care for these animals. Lowry acknowledged organizations like Herps Alive and FOCUS Rescue among others for their assistance. As recovery efforts continue, donations are urgently needed.

A Closer Look at the Animals’ Conditions

Nine horses were found in alarming conditions inside a Portage County barn. Witnesses described them lying in their own feces. Additionally, one calf was unable to stand due to severe malnutrition and the cats, dogs, bunnies, birds and guinea pigs inside the home had neither food nor water.

Sustained Efforts by Volunteers

The dedication of volunteers cannot be overlooked. Lowry noted that Our dedicated Volunteers are at the shelter every single day of the year (including all federal holidays) walking dogs. These volunteers play crucial roles in providing much-needed exercise and socialization for rescued animals.
