ANC Insists There Is Policy Certainty And All Existing Goverment Policies Remain In Effect

The African National Congress (ANC) asserts that there is policy certainty, emphasizing that all current government policies remain effective without exceptions.

In a statement released on Thursday morning, the party clarified that there were no sealed mandates for different ministers serving in the Government of National Unity (GNU).

President Cyril Ramaphosa’s executive comprises various political parties following the 2024 general elections, where no party gained a clear majority.

Organisations in the GNU have diverse approaches to national issues, including foreign policy, redress, and land redistribution.

As GNU ministers begin their duties, some are uncertain about which policy perspective to adopt.

This uncertainty has led some GNU signatories to pursue their party lines in their new roles. However, the ANC has quickly reminded them that existing policies are in place.

The ANC highlighted clause 19.3 of the statement of intent signed by the GNU partners, which states that to change policies, the majority must be canvassed by the party seeking to repeal, change, or introduce a new policy.

The ANC noted that sealed mandates for individual ministers in the GNU would contradict both the statement of intent and the spirit of the country’s Constitution.
