CLEVELAND, Ohio – A Cleveland man is facing accusations in a shooting on the city’s East Side that left two people wounded. One victim, struck four times, worked as a security guard at the apartment complex where the incident occurred, a witness told police.

Maurice Stearnes, 30, faces two counts of felonious assault in Cleveland Municipal Court. On Monday he posted a $75,000 bond.

On Saturday in the early morning, the security guard, 34, and Stearnes’ ex-girlfriend, 26, were talking on a bench behind an apartment complex in the city’s Hough neighborhood, according to the witness.

Eventually, Stearnes appeared, and he became visibly upset because the guard and the woman were flirting, the witness told police.

Stearnes walked up to the pair and started shooting, authorities say. Stearnes struck the security guard in the chest, abdomen, shoulder and arm, according to a police report.

As the guard tried to flee, he returned fire, striking Stearnes in the back, the report states. At some point, the woman was struck in the hip, police say.

All three people were treated at University Hospitals.
