‘Get help’ – Devin Haney’s father Bill Haney refuses to ‘kick Ryan Garcia while he’s down’ despite racial slurs
Devin Haney's father and trainer Bill Haney has opted not to heap further criticism onto Ryan Garcia.
The disgraced boxer was expelled by the WBC on Thursday after saying and tweeting a series of racial slurs against Black people and Muslims.
Garcia is already serving a one-year ban from boxing having tested positive for ostarine in multiple drugs tests taken around his fight with Haney in April.
The 25-year-old initially pulled off a major upset to win that showdown, however the result has since been overturned to a no-contest due to the drugs scandal.
Prior to the fight Garcia exhibited alarming behaviour on social media, but insisted after beating Haney that this was merely a ploy to convince people he was crazy and make them underestimate him.
Two-and-a-half months on though, his behaviour has only worsened and Thursday's disgraceful remarks have led to many people now distancing themselves from him.
Bill Haney reacted: "I'm definitely not happy to see the kid crashing out.
"I always try to be as optimistic as I can as just a human being.
"I hope everyone could be with me in my most trying times, as well as him going through his...
"All that team, I wish them well, but there's no place for that kind of talk.
"In particular being directed in the way that it's being directed.
"There's just no place for it."
Haney Sr concluded: "I think that he should get help.
"I don't believe in kicking a man while he's down.
"But he definitely should get help.
"And the people around him should step up and be held accountable.
"Speak loud and be just as happy that they can be there for Ryan in these kind of times.
"These are the kind of times that you see what kind of team you've got."
