France is on course for a historic triumph by a far right party this Sunday, even though Marine Le Pen’s National Rally looks set to fall short of an outright majority. Yet for Le Pen it comes at a price: renouncing her political heritage with her eyes on the bigger prize. The 55-year-old’s transition from fringe to frontrunner has been due in large part to her willingness to discard some of the more unsavory aspects of her legacy: Where the overt racism of her father, Jean-Marie Le Pen, condemned him to no better than a distant second place, she has sought to soften some of his more divisive rhetoric and to reassure the business community over her economic policies.
