New details provide a major breakthrough in a murder investigation in West Michigan.

33-year-old Lashaun Keith's death was deemed suspicious back in 2022, when his body was found in a hay field in Van Buren County.

A couple of hunters scouting land near the Kal-Haven Trail found Keith's body lying alone in the middle of a mowed field, according to Van Buren County deputies.

MSP Detectives responded to the field, finding Keith's body and a pair of gloves with DNA left behind, leading them to a man believed to be responsible for disposing of the body.

News Channel 3 is not releasing the name of the man, as he has not been officially arrested or charged.

However, other evidence left behind has led detectives to two men charged with open murder in June 2024:

  • Bryan Wimbley, a 29-year-old man from Hartford,
  • Zachary Trainor, a 22-year-old man from Watervliet

Both men told MSP Detectives they only meant to hurt Keith, "Not kill him."

According to court records News Channel 3 obtained, Keith was homeless and living under this bridge off of I-94 near the Kalmazoo Wings Event Center, which at the time was a construction site where both Wimbley and Trainor were working.

Wimbley told detectives during an interview, Keith was “Antagonistic to himself and other construction workers.”

Wimbley confessed he and Trainor had been drinking and went back to their jobsite Halloween night 2022 to “Teach him a lesson."

Trainor told police they killed Keith with a sledge hammer.

Wimbley admitted to detectives he hit Keith in the legs multiple times with a hammer, including after he fell down on train tracks and attempted to get back up.

Trainor confessed to striking Keith with his sledge hammer in the chest and ribs, telling detectives Keith was "fighting for his life at that pointe" and that he got ahold of the hammer.

Trainor goes on to admit he got on top of Keith punched him in the face and broke his own hand in doing so.

Trainor told detectives he paid another man $ 5,000 to help move Keith’s body almost an hour away over to the Van Buren County hay field.

Kalamazoo County Prosecutor Jeff Getting commends Michigan State Police for their thorough investigation.

“They did a really good job with following the evidence in order to work through people who they thought would have been involved to the pointe where they got to the potential perpetrators," Getting said.

According to MSP, the third man involved in moving Keith’s body has not been arrested or charged.

MSP said Trainor has been cooperative, even handing over the sledge hammer he claims he used to kill Keith.

Wimbley is due back in court for a probable cause hearing July 11, followed by a preliminary examination on July 18, according to Kalamazoo County court records.

Trainor is expected to appear for a probable cause hearing on July 5, followed by his preliminary examination on July 11, documents detailed.
