The air quality health advisory for Eastern Lake Ontario and Western New York regions has been extended into Tuesday, according to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation. Updated Advisory for June 17, 2024
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation and the State Department of Health have issued an air quality health advisory for Monday, June 17, due to ozone levels in the Eastern Lake Ontario and Western New York regions. The advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Concerns about Ozone
DEC and DOH release air quality health advisories when pollution levels are expected to surpass an air quality index (AQI) value of 100. Ozone, a major component of photochemical smog, is the current pollutant of concern. Ground-level ozone is mainly produced by automobile exhaust and out-of-state emission sources, leading to hazy skies and reduced visibility.
Health Implications
Individuals with cardiovascular or respiratory disease, young children, outdoor exercisers, and outdoor workers are advised to limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak ozone levels. Symptoms like shortness of breath, chest pain, or coughing should prompt consultation with a physician. Ozone levels typically decrease at night and can be reduced during the day by minimizing car travel and using public transportation.
Energy-Saving Recommendations
New Yorkers are encouraged to use mass transit, conserve fuel, turn off unnecessary lights and electrical appliances, and set air conditioning at 78 degrees Fahrenheit. Energy-efficient appliances with the Energy Star label are also recommended. Additionally, reducing outdoor burning and indoor sources of PM 2.5 like smoking can help improve air quality.
