Manchester United star Luke Shaw demonstrated a touch of class, choosing not to join his England team-mates in celebrating their penalty shoot-out victory over Switzerland.

Instead, he immediately went over to his Swiss opponents to shake their hands. Shaw, who came on as a second-half substitute, didn't take a spot-kick but watched as Cole Palmer, Jude Bellingham, Bukayo Saka, Ivan Toney and Trent Alexander-Arnold all scored from 12 yards.

This followed Jordan Pickford saving the Swiss' first effort from Manuel Akanji. While most of the England squad rushed off to join Alexander-Arnold as he sprinted towards the Three Lions fans, Shaw showed his respect for Granit Xhaka and his team by consoling them.

The Swiss players were visibly emotional, breaking down in tears as they were knocked out of the competition. However, Shaw was the only player who chose not to celebrate.

He instead was seen shaking hands with every Swiss player he could. The United left-back was brought onto the pitch at the 78-minute mark, shortly after Breel Embolo had put Switzerland ahead at the far post, reports the Express.

But just moments later, Saka equalised with a low shot from the edge of the box past Yann Sommer, sending the game into extra-time. Skipper Harry Kane had to be subbed off after a tumble into the ad boards left him with a thigh injury during extra time.

But it all turned out okay in the end, as his replacement, Brentford's ace Ivan Toney, stepped up to the spot without so much as a glance at the ball and slotted it home. Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold, who bagged the decisive penalty, was all praise for his squad's nerve in front of goal.

He told reporters post-match: "It is what we have practiced." He added: "When the gaffer said I was taking one, I enjoy it and I practice it - I knew I had to just execute it. All five penalties from us were great."

England's triumph was summed up by the defender's words: "Incredible, these are the goals that we set for ourselves. Difficult opponent going behind and the team showed a lot of character, belief, heart and spirit out there.

"We knew it was going to be tight. Whatever it takes and no matter what we win - that is all that matters to us."
