President Bola Tinubu has reiterated his administration’s dedication to the welfare and professional development of the Nigerian Army.

Speaking at the grand finale of the 2024 Nigerian Army Day Celebration (NADCEL 2024) in Jos, Plateau State, the President, represented by the Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, unveiled several initiatives aimed at enhancing the capabilities and welfare of the nation’s armed forces.

In his address, President Tinubu emphasized his administration’s commitment to building a well-equipped and professional army. He stated, “As your Commander-In-Chief, my administration is committed to building a well-equipped and truly professional army that will remain the pride of the nation. We are committed to providing you with all that you need to enable you to fulfill your constitutional responsibilities.”

Among the initiatives announced, the President approved Group Life Assurance for all members of the Nigerian Army who died in the line of duty and the procurement of attack helicopters and other essential equipment to enhance combat efficiency.

“To heighten your combat efficiency and dexterity, I also approved the purchase of attack helicopters and other necessary equipment and combat enablers for you to carry out your assignments more proficiently and effectively,” he said.

Praising the Nigerian Army for their dedication and sacrifices in ensuring national security, President Tinubu emphasized the importance of collaboration with other security agencies and communities to maintain national security. “You must sustain the progress made so far and evolve strategies to ensure that violent groups do not overwhelm peaceful and law-abiding Nigerians,” he urged.

Earlier, Chief of Army Staff Lt. Gen. Lagbaja announced the launch of the Affordable Housing for All (AHOOAS) scheme, aimed at providing subsidized housing for troops. “Over 500 apartments have been built for the men and women of the Nigerian Army who have subscribed to the AHOOAS scheme, with a portion specifically reserved for soldiers disabled in the line of duty,” he stated.

Lt. Gen. Lagbaja also highlighted the Army’s successful containment of bandit activities, reduction of Boko Haram terrorism, and curtailment of farmer-herder conflicts and emphasized the Army’s commitment to professionalism and ethical standards, aligning with President Tinubu’s directives to address security challenges decisively.

“With the acquisition of two helicopters and numerous battle enablers, the Army has successfully contained bandit activities in the North-West, reduced Boko Haram terrorism, and curtailed farmer-herder conflicts. We are focused on the ultimate goal of achieving the total elimination of all threats to our dear nation and its people within the shortest practicable time,” he assured.

The event included a file pass and demonstration, COAS honors and awards, souvenir presentations, and a tour of research and development/historical exhibition stands.
