Student's death sparks off revenge attacks in Kumi

Several houses were torched and property looted and destroyed in Nyero, Kumi district in revenge attacks following the death of a pupil on Wednesday.  

The 14-year-old primary five pupil, Jane Titin from Auruku Ominai primary school was allegedly beaten to death by a classmate during an argument.

According to the police, the pupils were playing in class when the two minors picked up a disagreement. One of the pupils allegedly boxed the victim on the breast and she collapsed. East Kyoga regional police spokesman, Edison Ebukulem says that after the incident, the victim was rushed to Nyero health centre where she was pronounced dead on arrival. 

Ebukulem says the police have registered a case of murder at Kumi Central police station vide CRB:394/2024. He said the relatives of the deceased on receiving the information about the death of their daughter, mobilized and attacked the family of the suspect and looted several properties including an unspecified number of goats, sheep, and cows as well as burning several temporal and semi-permanent houses. 

Ebukulem notes that the police have arrested the suspected pupil, aged 13 years who is currently being detained at CPS Kumi as investigations are under way.
