In a tragic incident that rocked the Egbeda Community in Emohua Local Government Area of Rivers State, members of the local vigilante group OSPAC killed a youth leader, Innocent Didia, during a protest on May 31, 2024.

The circumstances surrounding the protest and the fatal confrontation are still under investigation by the police, who have pledged to bring those responsible to justice.

Commissioner of Police Olatunji Disu addressed the public, urging residents to report any instances of assault, extortion, or illegal detention by vigilante groups. He reassured the community of the Command’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding lives and property, and he condemned any form of criminal activity by these groups.

“While we recognize the significant role vigilante groups play in community policing, it is imperative that they operate within the confines of the law and respect constitutional rights,” CP Disu stated.

“The police will continue to work closely with these groups to ensure they conduct themselves appropriately and in accordance with legal standards.”

The police have emphasized the need for proper conduct and collaboration between law enforcement and community policing groups to prevent such incidents from occurring in the future.

The Command has promised to keep the public informed about the progress of the investigation and the steps being taken to prosecute those involved in the tragic death of Innocent Didia.
