WATCH: Search continues for escaped jail inmate from DeSoto County

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. - The reward for an escaped Desoto County jail inmate has increased.

Joshua Zimmerman escaped from the courthouse last month.

Almost 3 weeks later, multiple law enforcement agencies are still looking for him.

FOX13 spoke with the DeSoto County District Attorney’s Office on Wednesday to get an update on the case. DA Matthew Barton told FOX13 he wants to match the U.S. Marshals’ effort in hopes of getting Zimmerman off the streets.

The increased amount is a combination between the U.S. Marshals and the DeSoto County DA’s Office, both offering $10,000 each.

“This is a very, very dangerous guy, one of the worst types there is,” Barton told FOX13 Wednesday.

The 30-year old Zimmerman has been on the run since June 14. Authorities are urging caution, referring to Zimmerman as armed and dangerous.

“He shot somebody in Texas. He shot somebody in Mississippi," Barton said. "He’s done a slew of other crimes in other states."

People in the community, including the DA, have questions.

“Who was helping, if anybody?” Barton asked.

FOX13 also spoke with residents about the escape.

“How did that happen?" Ellen Newsome of Desoto County said. "So, somebody needs to be held accountable for that. They didn’t really follow procedure in the way they let him get out so easily. They need to look at that and see how somebody could so easily escape when they are supposed to be in shackles and everything. So, the Desoto County Sheriff’s Department needs to be looking into that.”

Zimmerman faces attempted murder charges in Southaven.

According to a Facebook post put out by the Southaven Police Department, Zimmerman was a person of interest who went by the name “Mike” and was linked to a shooting on the morning of Sept. 27 on Grandview Cove. He’s also wanted for murder in Texas.

The question still remains: How did Zimmerman get away and for so long?

“When you’re gone this long," Barton told FOX13, "you have to wonder if there’s help because you can’t run from the law unless you have finance."

The escape was caught on camera. Last month, FOX13 reported on DA Barton’s announcement that the surveillance footage was deleted from his server by an “outside entity.”

Barton had this to say when FOX13 requested a copy of the video Wednesday:

“The video was returned to our office after we issued subpoenas on certain entities, but I cannot do anything with the video other than go to grand jury. The county put a gag order on it essentially.”

The case also seemingly grabbed the attention of a famous name: Duane Chapman, also known as "Dog the Bounty Hunter," who posted about the investigation on his social media pages.

FOX13 reached out to the U.S. Marshals, who confirmed with our team that Chapman is not affiliated with the Marshals’ investigation. The office told FOX13 that it has not spoken to Chapman but appreciates the TV personality putting the information out to his viewers.
