Security guard crushed to death by car

A security guard has been crushed to death after a man lost control of a car in the parking lot of a block of flats in Dhaka.

The building, Sheltech Shyamolima, is situated in East Rajabazar, Farmgate and the incident occurred around 8am on Thursday, triggering protests among the locals for justice for guard Fazlul Haque, 27.

Mafidul Islam, the owner of the car, was behind the wheels during the incident. He fled the scene after the incident, said Anwar Hossain Khan, a sub-inspector at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station.

CCTV footage of the building showed Fazlul standing at the gate after opening it for a person who went out.

Suddenly, a white Toyota Premio rams Fazlur and the gate. The car stops after hitting the wall of the building opposite to Sheltech Shyamolima.

A man identified himself only as Habibur, the chauffeur of Mafidul.

Habibur told police that Mafidul is a former engineer of the Roads and Highways Department.

He said Mafidul had wanted to check the brake pad of the car because it was worn out.

“He took the wheel and moved forward by pressing the accelerator. I think he mistakenly pressed the accelerator while pressing the brakes. The car then rammed the gate.

“I helped him out of the car and switched the ignition off. Then I saw the other man under the car. We took him to hospital by a rickshaw, but the doctor said he was dead.”

Abdul Ahad, chief of the local police station, said they heard Mafidul was a freedom fighter.

“We’re yet to confirm his full identity. We’re trying to arrest him,” he said.
