To reduce road accidents caused by articulated trucks on Nigerian highways, the Joint National Transport Safety Committee has inaugurated a task force to patrol the roads.

The National Chairman of the Committee, Mr. Mogbojuri Taiwo, inaugurated the South-West, South-South, and South-East coordinators of the task force in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

He mentioned that three truck parks would be set up in Delta.

Taiwo stated that over the years, Nigerians have experienced many road crashes caused by these trucks. He noted that many lives have been lost this year due to truck-related accidents, particularly in Port Harcourt, Lagos, Ogun, and other parts of the country.

To address this issue, the Federal Government decided to create this committee to monitor these incidents and ensure road safety, ultimately aiming to save the lives of Nigerians. He explained that the committee is working with relevant agencies, such as FRSC, Police, NSCDC, and others, to monitor these trucks for the safety of the people.

Taiwo added that the committee would implement measures to subject truck drivers to checks at the point of loading to determine if they are fit to enter the road. He also mentioned that plans are underway to include truck drivers in the national insurance scheme. He highlighted that the three truck parks to be built in Delta State would create jobs for the state’s unemployed population.

The Chairman indicated that the committee would soon meet with other stakeholders, like the National Road Transport Workers, to sensitize them before commencing enforcement.

The task force coordinator for South-South and Chairman of the Delta State chapter of the committee, Mr. Okoisor Ikemefuna, praised the National Chairman for inaugurating the task force in Delta. He emphasized the importance of Nigerian safety and commended the Federal Government for the initiative.
