‘Castle Doombad Classic’ Coming to All Platforms Including Mobile in 2024, ‘Castle Doombad 2’ Also in the Works

This is one of those posts where I go “Holy moly! I can’t believe that game came out ten years ago!" Today’s game in question that is making me feel old is none other than Castle Doombad, an awesome dungeon/tower defense style game from developer Grumpyface Studios that was originally published by Adult Swim Games way back in January of 2014. As you may or may not be aware, Adult Swim Games has largely gone defunct over the past several years, and along with that Castle Doombad is no longer on the App Store. This of course bummed Grumpyface out, but thankfully they were able to reacquire the rights to the IP and last year announced their intention to completely remake Castle Doombad from the ground up for modern platforms.

Since that remake endeavor got underway, however, the developer quickly realized with how ambitiously they were changing and adding new things that it would make more sense to just create a full-blown sequel. Thus Castle Doombad Remake has now spun off into two separate projects. One is that full-blown sequel, titled Castle Doombad 2: Muahaha!, which will feature “new content, a surprising new gameplay direction, 2-Player Co-Op Mode, and a brand new story." That game doesn’t have a release date just yet, and it is only targeting PC and Switch platforms at the moment (fingers crossed for mobile!). In addition Grumpyface is also working on Castle Doombad Classic, which will be more like what they were originally setting out to do, an updated preservation of the original game, but with some new content and ideas that they weren’t able to put into the game back when it released a decade ago. Here’s Grumpyface’s Chris Graham dressed up like Dr. Lord Evilstein to explain all the nitty gritty.

As you just heard from Dr. Lord Evilstein himself, Castle Doombad Classic will be launching this year on Steam, Switch, iOS, and Android. For mobile it will be a special version called Castle Doombad: Free to Slay, and if you remember the original Castle Doombad release from 2014 you also likely remember that about six months after that they released a game called Castle Doombad: Free to Slay that was essentially a very tastefully done free to play version of the premium game. I imagine something very similar will be in store with the PC and Switch versions of Castle Doombad Classic being paid and the mobile versions being free. I adore Grumpyface Studios with so many amazing titles under their belt, like the Steven Universe Attack the Light/Unleash the Light games, Teeny Titans, Bring Me Sandwiches!!, and even the very first game I ever played from them Wispin way back in 2010. But I sure do have a soft spot for Castle Doombad and cannot wait to see it resurrected sometime later this year.
