New Delhi: Zika virus and dengue cases are on the rise in the southern state of Karnataka, driven by the current monsoon condition. A 74-year-old man died of a suspected Zika virus infection on Thursday in Shivamogga. Probably this is the first suspected death caused due to Zika virus infection in the state this year.

According to the health department, the Zika-positive case is only an ‘incidental finding’ and that the man died from Multi-Organ Dysfunction Syndrome and breathing difficulties. Following this Karnataka government has asked the Deputy Commissioners to stay vigilant after one death was reported due to Zika Virus infections on July 5th. But how does the Zika Virus impact vulnerable populations?

Dr Vigyan Mishra Chief of lab-Neuberg Diagnostics, Noida told News9, “In older adults, Zika virus infection can lead to more severe complications due to weakened immune systems. They are at higher risk of developing neurological issues like Guillain-Barré syndrome, which causes muscle weakness and paralysis. Additionally, pre-existing health conditions in older adults can exacerbate the severity of Zika virus symptoms.”

Preventive measures to take against zika virus

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Zika virus disease is an emerging mosquito-borne virus that was first identified in Uganda in 1947. One of the best ways to protect yourself from the Zika virus is by preventing mosquito bites indoors and outdoors, especially from sunrise to sunset when mosquitoes are the most active.

Here are some steps to follow:

Protect yourself from mosquitoes: During such situations, the risk of Zika or the current outbreak of Zika virus, it is better to cover the exposed area of the skin with clothing and use mosquito repellants.

Stay indoors: It is better to keep the windows and doors closed and stay indoors as much as possible to prevent mosquito bites.

Avoid travelling to areas with Zika virus if you are pregnant: If you are travelling to an area with a higher risk of Zika virus, especially when you are pregnant, do avoid such a situation.
