Former professional baseball player and Giants player Tatsuya Matsumoto sentenced to 1 year and 6 months in prison with 3 years of probation for theft, Takamatsu District Court

The Takamatsu District Court handed down a suspended sentence to former professional baseball pitcher for the Yomiuri Giants, Matsumoto Tatsuya, who was charged with theft for stealing a watch while working as a cleaner.

According to the verdict, defendant Tatsuya Matsumoto (31) stole two wristwatches, worth a total of 330,000 yen at the time, from a house in Takamatsu City where he had entered for cleaning work in January 2024.

At the trial on July 5th, Matsumoto admitted to the charges and said, “My income decreased and I was struggling to make ends meet.”

The prosecution sought a prison sentence of one year and six months, while the defense sought a suspended sentence.

Judge Eiichi Fukano of the Takamatsu District Court sentenced the defendant to one year and six months in prison, suspended for three years, because “although the crime was selfish, the defendant paid a settlement and demonstrated remorse.”
