SouthEast: That Part Of The Country Has Suffered A Lot Of Injustice - Shehu Sani

Human rights activist and media critic Senator Shehu Sani has said that the southeast has been wronged due to an external issue.

During an interview with The Sun, Shehu Sani discussed restructuring. He stated that if Nigeria does not intend to return to six regional arrangements, then it is only fair and equitable that the southeast be treated equally with the other zones. He advocated for the creation of a state in the area if it were deemed essential for the region to experience development.

Shehu continued by saying that the Southeast has endured injustice and that its people continue to bear the shame of a bygone era. Such an action, he warned, might threaten Nigeria's unity.

A reorganisation of Nigeria's future cannot include the establishment of new states, he said. In a reorganised Nigeria, states will dissolve and six regions will be established. Each area will then be responsible for developing its own set of policies and programmes, as well as finding ways to fund them. I also don't think we should bring up the subject of creating states if we're going to do that.

And if we're not going to return to six regional systems, then it's only right that the Southeast gets the state it needs to be equated with the other zones and develop. A historical stigma is being passed down from parents to children and grandchildren in that region of the nation, which has resulted in a great deal of unfairness for an issue that did not originate there. This poses a serious threat to the country's cohesiveness.
