In a significant move towards potentially mending a decade-long rift, Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan has announced that Turkey is prepared to extend an invitation to Syrian President Bashar Assad "at any time" for discussions aimed at restoring diplomatic relations between the two neighboring countries. Erdogan emphasized his willingness to rebuild the ties that were severed in 2011 following the outbreak of the Syrian civil war, during which Turkey supported rebel factions opposing Assad's regime, according to Reuters.

According to a readout from the Turkish presidency, Erdogan articulated his intentions in an interview with Turkish media, stating, "We will extend our invitation [to Assad]; with this invitation, we want to restore Turkey-Syria relations to the same level as in the past. Our invitation may be extended at any time." This marks a notable shift in Turkey's stance, highlighting a desire to heal the diplomatic breach and return to a period of cooperation and mutual engagement that existed before the civil war.

During his remarks to reporters on his return flight from Berlin, Erdogan also mentioned that Ankara is ready to respond positively to any constructive steps from Damascus. He pointed out that Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani could play crucial roles in facilitating this diplomatic contact, underscoring the importance of regional cooperation in achieving these goals.

Erdogan further elaborated, "We have now arrived at a point where if Bashar Assad takes a step towards improving relations with Turkey, we will also show that approach towards him." This statement reflects a readiness to engage in reciprocal measures to foster improved relations, suggesting that Turkey is open to dialogue and collaboration with Syria under the right conditions.

The potential thaw in relations between Turkey and Syria could have profound implications for regional stability and geopolitics. It signals a shift from a period of hostility to one of potential reconciliation, which could pave the way for broader regional cooperation and perhaps even influence the dynamics of the ongoing conflict in Syria.

This development follows years of tension and conflict, during which Turkey supported various rebel groups aiming to overthrow Assad, while Syria accused Turkey of interference in its internal affairs. Restoring diplomatic ties would require addressing a range of complex issues, but Erdogan's overture represents a critical first step in what could be a long and challenging process.
