Emirs Sanusi II and Ado Bayero's long-running feud has reached a new stage. Thursday saw the official and customary flag raised at the Nasarawa small palace, thus establishing Aminu Ado Bayero's authority as the fifteenth Emir of Kano.

Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the state administration of Kano, Nigeria, responded by calling the whole thing a publicity stunt. Muhammadu Sanusi II, the 16th Emir of Kano, is still recognised as the rightful emir, according to the government.

At six in the morning on June 27, the flag was hoisted to assert Emir Bayero's authority in the face of his continuing dispute with Emir Sanusi II, as a result of changes to the Kano Emirates Council Law.

According to Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, a spokesperson for Governor Yusuf, the flag-raising ceremony at the Nasarawa palace was an effort to garner attention from the public. As far as publicity goes, it's a fruitless endeavour. Emir Sanusi's status as Emir of Kano is beyond dispute, according to Bature.

As for the Emirate dispute, a lawyer named Umar Sa'ad Hassan from Kano provided an interpretation of the decision from the federal high court. He elaborated by saying that the verdict shows Sanusi Lamido no longer qualifies as Emir of Kano, even though the state administration and Aminu Ado Bayero's faction have different views. Hassan pointed out that the reinstatement of Sanusi by Governor Yusuf was null and invalid since it took place after the injunction was issued.
