Rivers State Needs Peace, Time to Resolve the Political Crisis

opera.com 5 days ago

The crisis in Rivers State has reached a boiling point, with the recent appointment of Eze Chike Worlu Wodo as chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers by Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This move is seen as a deliberate attempt to dismantle the political structure of Fubara's predecessor, Nyesome Wike, and weaken his influence in the state. The crisis, which began in 2023, has led to a factionalized House of Assembly, the demolition of the Assembly complex, and the disruption of local government activities.

The appointment of Wodo, a supporter of Fubara, to replace King Sergeant Awuse, a loyalist of Wike, is a clear indication of the governor's resolve to consolidate power and marginalize his predecessor's allies. The crisis has also led to the swearing-in of new caretaker chairmen for the 23 local government areas, replacing Wike's loyalists.

The situation in Rivers State is precarious, with the potential to heighten insecurity in the Niger Delta region. Blueprint calls on Wike and Fubara to put aside their differences and work towards achieving peace in the state. While efforts by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and other statesmen to resolve the crisis are acknowledged, more needs to be done to achieve lasting peace. The nation cannot afford the disruption of oil exploration and exportation in the region, which is already plagued by illegal oil thieves and militants. It is time for all parties to sheathe their swords and work towards a peaceful resolution.
