Girona put on a show at Estadio Gran Canaria, defeating Las Palmas 2-0 to go up to second place in La Liga. Flashscore describes the match as an exciting encounter.

As the game progressed, Las Palmas showed early promise by getting a penalty in the first five minutes. But Paulo Gazzaniga, a longtime mainstay of the Premier League, showed off his skills by stopping Sandro Ramírez in his tracks to deny the home team an early lead.

Girona made the longest away trip in top-tier European football history this season, but they eventually settled into a groove following a sluggish beginning. Artem Dovbyk was about to take the penalty after Eric Garcia tugged on his jersey, but Álvaro Valles blocked his advance. David Lopez, however, turned the rebound into a point, making up for his earlier penalty give-away.

The unrelenting Girona team persisted in their assault, and Dovbyk just missed a chance to increase their advantage prior to halftime. Nevertheless, their perseverance paid off when Dovbyk expertly scored another penalty kick, his 19th goal of the year, despite Valles' heroic attempt to stop him.

Even with a late push from Las Palmas that included a shot that struck the crossbar, Girona remained composed to win all three points. Their victory moved them up to a temporary second position, preparing the fans for an exciting Catalan derby against Barcelona at the Estadio Municipal de Montilivi.

Las Palmas' problems continued, however, as they lost for the sixth time in a row, finishing in 13th position and managing just one goal in their terrible run of play.

In other action, Atletico Madrid demonstrated their superiority over Athletic Club in a pivotal match, winning 3-1 at the Metropolitano and widening their lead in the competition for the last UEFA Champions League qualifying slot. Rodrigo De Paul opened the scoring with an impressive half-volley after a smart deflection off the head of an Athletic defender.

Atlético showed an unyielding drive to overcome their past failings against Athletic from the off. Athletic Club showed resiliency in spite of Atlético's early lead when Nico Williams scored their first goal on target shortly before halftime by capitalizing on Gorka Guruzeta's delivery and putting the ball past Jan Oblak.

Refusing to give up, Atlético quickly took the lead again in the second half, thanks to a magnificent pass from Koke that split the defense and was skillfully executed by Correa.

Even though Correa went just wide of another chance to give them a bigger lead, Atlético was fortunate that Unai Simón's own goal from Samuel Lino's attempt with ten minutes left clinched the win. With a comfortable six-point lead in the standings, Diego Simeone's team is getting closer to guaranteeing their spot in the elite Champions League for the following year.

On the other hand, Athletic Club is in a vulnerable situation as they have lost four straight league games and have a lengthy losing streak while playing away from home in head-to-head meetings.
