A video that went viral on social media was shared by Cyprian Nyakundi where policemen from Kericho were asking drivers for cash at mid-night.
Some sources claimed that the incident occurred close to the SBI where police officers were forcing every car and motorcycle to halt and pay Ksh 50 to Ksh 100 bribes. The video has stimulated a lot of anger and interest on social media platforms. This depicts situations where police officers stop vehicles at night with nowhere to be seen, and do as they want, which is unlawful.
People have roundly condemned the social media post and are demanding the head of the officers in question. Many examples of officers offering bribes or demanding bribes have been told, through which Kenya’s National Police Service has been criticized as corrupt.
As we have seen with this new event, the issue of how to enhance police accountability and transform has been realised. Thus far, the government has not given out any statement concerning the video.
However, the problem is that due to the protest of the public the government and police oversight groups want to solve the issue the soonest time possible. This means people are being advised to remain vigilant and should inform appropriate authority in cases of police misconduct.
