President Vladimir Putin Calls Taliban Russia’s Allies Against Terrorism Despite Past Bans

Russian President Vladimir Putin recently discussed the Taliban's role in Afghanistan, describing them as crucial partners in combating terrorism, despite Russia banning the group since 2003.

According to a report by Channels Television, Putin, speaking in Astana, emphasized the importance of recognizing the Taliban's authority in Afghanistan, suggesting that any governing body would prioritize stability.

Over time, Russia has cultivated ties with the Taliban, with Putin advocating for stronger relations last month.

Despite the Taliban's controversial rule, they have long battled the Islamic State Khorasan, resulting in significant violence, such as the deadly attack on a Moscow concert hall in March by IS-K militants.

This incident marked Russia's deadliest terrorist attack in nearly 20 years. Since seizing power in 2021, the Taliban have imposed strict Islamic laws, notably limiting women's public roles.

Putin acknowledged the Taliban's governance efforts but stressed the ongoing need for Afghanistan to address internal challenges with global support.
