Godwin Emefiele, the former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, requested the release of his passport so that he may travel abroad for medical treatment, but the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission has objected to his request.

According to a report by Punch. The EFCC opposed to the defence attorney, Abdulakeem Labi-Lawal, filing an affidavit asking for Emefiele's passport to be released so he could go to the UK for medical treatment.

The prosecution's counter-affidavit and the defense's affidavit from Monday furthered the points raised by both sides' earlier filing on June 25, 2024.

In response to the counter-affidavit, the prosecution's attorney, Muhammad Omeiza, informed the court that there was no medical report on file demonstrating Emefiele's illness, according to a statement released on Monday by the commission's head of media and publicity, Dele Oyewale.

He went on to say that even if there was, there was no proof that it couldn't be handled locally in Nigeria.
