Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole has described the current N30,000 minimum wage as a joke.

According to daily post, Oshiomhole stated that workers' pay packages should be increased in light of the current reality, which includes soaring prices.

Speaking on Channels Televison's Politics Today, the legislator stated that Nigerian workers, the federal government, and state governments all agree on the need to raise the minimum wage.

He stated, "I believe there is some consensus among employers, including private employers, the federal government, and I suppose state governments, that the current minimum wage of 30,000 is a joke.

"There is an awareness that the purchasing power of workers across the board, including directors and permanent secretaries, not to mention those on levels one through four, has declined dramatically, and you must increase it.

"In a capitalist economy, there are even countries where wages are linked to inflation. So, I believe there is a shared commitment that wages should rise dramatically, in line with price increases," he said.

Recall that the federal government had assured the Nigerian workers that the new minimum wage will take effect from May 1, 2024.

This followed the Federal Government’s approval of 25 per cent and 35 per cent salary increments for the remaining six consolidated salary structures
