According to a report from PUNCH, the Nigerien army has reported the killing of more than 100 "terrorists" following a deadly attack against its troops near the border with Burkina Faso.

The attack, which occurred on June 25 in the Tera region, left 20 soldiers and one civilian dead, according to the latest bulletin from the Nigerien army.

"More than 100 terrorists have been killed since," the army said on Thursday, adding that the operations are still ongoing.

The initial attack on June 25 had prompted the army to launch swift retaliatory strikes, with the military claiming to have killed around 30 "terrorists" the very next day.

This was followed by an air raid that "destroyed their means of war," the army had reported earlier.

The Tera region, located in the Tillaberi area bordering Mali and Burkina Faso, has been a hotspot of jihadist activity for nearly a decade.

Armed groups affiliated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State have been waging a bloody insurgency in the area, frequently targeting civilians and causing widespread displacement.

"Civilians are frequently targeted in the area by jihadists, prompting many people to flee their homes," the report noted.
