In a tragic turn of events, two individuals have lost their lives in a boat mishap while crossing the Kwalgwai River towards Hadin village in Auyo Local Government area of Jigawa State. According to report by Vanguard News published on July 8 2024, The spokesperson for the Jigawa Police Command, DSP Lawan Shiisu, confirmed the unfortunate incident, also noting that 18 other individuals had been successfully rescued.
According to DSP Shiisu, the mishap occurred when a group of passengers, including marketers, boarded a canoe that unfortunately capsized due to powerful waves and overloading. The victims, consisting of both males and females, were traveling from Kwalgwai village in Auyo LGA. The Divisional Police Officer of Auyo Division promptly reported the incident to the command on Sunday at around 10:00 pm.
Upon receiving the report, a team of policemen led by the DPO swiftly responded to the scene, seeking assistance from divers, fishermen, and compassionate individuals in the vicinity. Thanks to their collective efforts, eighteen passengers were successfully rescued, but unfortunately, two female passengers remained missing.
Tragically, one of the missing passengers, identified as 18-year-old Habiba Ado from Kwalgai, was discovered and recovered the following morning. She was immediately transported to Auyo hospital, where a medical doctor sadly confirmed her passing.
Later, the second missing woman was also found lifeless, bringing the total number of casualties to two. The Jigawa Police Command expressed their deepest sympathies to the affected families during this difficult time.
Preliminary investigations suggest that the accident was primarily caused by powerful waves and overloading, making it challenging for the canoe operator to maintain control.
All the rescued passengers were promptly taken to the hospital for necessary medical attention. Authorities are currently conducting further investigations to gather additional information and prevent similar accidents in the future.
