Retirees in Rivers state have been assured of prompt payment of their entitlement as soon as they disengage from active service.

Offering this reassurance, the Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, also pledged to implement the salary increase recently sanctioned by the Federal Government for workers in the State once the necessary parameters are provided.

Governor Fubara delivered this commitment at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium in Port Harcourt during the observance of the 2024 International Workers Day, themed 'People First', which took place on Wednesday.

According to the report from the Vanguard, The Governor underscored his Administration's concern about the challenging state of the nation's economy, marked by escalating inflation, which has adversely affected the purchasing power and well-being of the average workers and their families.

He stated, "Let me assure you that we are going to collaborate with the Federal Government to enact essential measures, including the continuation of the complimentary bus services and the provision of necessary palliatives to alleviate the current hardships faced by ordinary citizens.

"We are also dedicated to implementing the recently approved salary increments for workers by the Federal Government as soon as the parameters are released."

"We are a receptive Government, and we have acknowledged the prevalent concerns and requests of labor regarding the necessity of jumpstarting economic growth and enhancing the quality of life for our populace."

Governor Fubara recognized workers as valuable human resources that have significantly contributed to the enduring long-term economic development of the State.

He emphasized that workers are indispensable, operating from the production lines of both small and large factories to government offices and institutions.

Regarding May Day, the Governor declared, “Rivers State is economically robust, resilient, and thriving because of our workers. Our local governments and communities owe their strength to the dedicated work of our employees.

"Our country holds the position of the largest economy in sub-Saharan Africa solely due to the commitment, endeavors, and accomplishments of our workers.

"This implies that nation-building and societal progress are unattainable without the contributions, efforts, and sacrifices of the workforce."
