ENG 2-1 SVK: Match Review As Bellingham's Stoppage-Time Heroics Propel England to Quarter-Finals

England came from behind to beat Slovakia 2-1 in the Euro 2024 Round of 16, thanks to Jude Bellingham's historic stoppage-time goal and Harry Kane's extra-time header, according to a report by Flashscore.

England's start was uninspiring, with Slovakia looking dangerous early on. Dávid Hancko and Lukáš Haraslín threatened to score, with the latter's effort thwarted by Marc Guéhi. Despite chances for Harry Kane and Kobbie Mainoo, England struggled. Slovakia took the lead when David Strelec’s precise through ball found Ivan Schranz, who finished clinically with the outside of his right foot, marking his third goal of the tournament.

Despite a lackluster first half where England failed to register a shot on target, no changes were made at halftime. Phil Foden had a goal disallowed for offside shortly after the restart, but Slovakia remained threatening. Strelec nearly capitalized on a defensive error, sending a long-range shot wide of Jordan Pickford’s goal.

Seeking fresh energy, Cole Palmer replaced Kieran Trippier, but Slovakia’s goalkeeper, Martin Dúbravka, remained largely unchallenged. England's captain Harry Kane missed a clear chance, heading wide from Foden’s free-kick. Declan Rice’s long-range effort hit the post, adding to England's frustration.

As the match neared its end, Bellingham provided a lifeline. In stoppage time, he acrobatically finished from Marc Guéhi’s flick-on of Kyle Walker’s long throw, scoring England's first shot on target and equalizing the match. This last-minute goal sent the game into extra-time.

Just 52 seconds into extra-time, England completed their comeback. Ivan Toney redirected Eberechi Eze’s miss-hit shot into Kane’s path, and the captain headed home from close range. This remarkable turnaround denied Slovakia their first major tournament quarter-final as an independent nation and secured England a place in the last eight, where they will face Switzerland in Düsseldorf on Saturday.
