In terms of hierarchy in the Kenya Police Service, Gideon Munga Nyale is the third most powerful cop in the country after the Inspector General of Police and Deputy Inspector General of Police.
Nyale has come a very long way in the police service which he joined over 30 years ago. From a constable, he has risen to the rank of Senior Assistant Inspector General of Police.
He is most remembered for his time as the commandant of the much dreaded Flying Squad unit as he led a team of sharpshooters in combating armed robbery in the country, especially in the capital city, Nairobi.
After commanding the Flying Squad, Munga Nyale was appointed as the Commandant of the Anti-Terrorism Police Unit.
The seasoned cop would later move very close to the central police power when he was appointed as the Principal Assistant to former Inspector General of Police, Hillary Mutyambai.
He would later be appointed as the Director of operations at the Kenya Police headquarters. In the position, he was right at the centre of all police activities in the country.
Nyale was among those Interviewed for the Director of Criminals Investigations following but he was edged out by Mohamed Amin.
He would later be interviewed for the Deputy Inspector General of Police position but once again lost the battle to former GSU Commandant Douglas Kirocho Kanja.
But Nyale was given a soft landing by President William Ruto who appointed him as the police training college Commandant to replace Bruno Shioso.
Now at the heart of police training in the country, Nyale is one powerful cop in the country today. When the current Inspector General of Police Japheth Koome exits office in 2026, many are tipping the former Flying Squad Commander to succeed him.
