Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has advocated for swift investigations and judicial processes to reduce prison congestion, particularly for awaiting trial inmates.

According to Punch, Governor Fubara emphasized the need for effective functioning of the Nigeria Police Force and Judiciary to address delays in trials, attributing overcrowding in correctional centers to prolonged legal proceedings.

Speaking during a visit by the House of Representatives Committee on Reformatory Institutions led by Hon. Chinedu Ogah, Governor Fubara underscored the importance of timely justice delivery in decongesting correctional facilities nationwide.

He highlighted instances where prompt judicial intervention had led to bail or pardon for some inmates, urging systemic improvements to prevent undue delays.

Acknowledging efforts to integrate ex-convicts into society, Governor Fubara stressed the significance of vocational and educational programs within correctional centers to facilitate rehabilitation.

He commended the committee's oversight and urged legislative support to enforce effective reformation measures.

In response, Hon. Chinedu Ogah expressed concerns over neglect in the correctional system and highlighted ongoing efforts to expand facilities and enhance security measures.

He commended Governor Fubara's initiatives in youth empowerment and crime reduction, noting a decrease in crime rates since the governor assumed office.
