Revealed: Why Eldoret Youths With Rungus Walked In The Streets On Thursday 27 But Didn't Protest

opera.com 5 days ago

More than 300 youths gathered at the Eldoret County headquarters early Thursday morning before starting to patrol the streets of the town. In what they termed as 'protecting their city against violent protesters', the young men carrying clubs roamed the streets removing the remains of stones used during Tuesday's protest against the 2024 Finance Bill.

There was confusion as some traders hurriedly closed their businesses for fear of being robbed, as was the case on Tuesday. They later gathered at the county headquarters where they held a meeting as riot police watched from a distance.

Two trucks of military officers had arrived at the county park but left shortly after. There was a heavy presence of security personnel in the city to avoid clashes between the anti-tax protesters and those in favor of the Finance Bill. The armed men beat those who appeared to take their pictures and record their activities.

The groups, according to the residents, were foreigners in the city. Early on Wednesday, the group's supporters walked some of the city's streets singing traditional songs and making traditional prayers, similar to war cries and purification rituals following Tuesday's protests that caused the destruction of buildings and the looting of property.
