In a surprising turn of events, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes has been linked with a potential move away from Old Trafford. Reports suggest that new sporting director Dan Ashworth is preparing for the possibility of Fernandes' departure by identifying potential replacements, with Netherlands star Xavi Simons emerging as a top candidate.

Fernandes, one of the Red Devils’ key players, scored 15 goals and provided 13 assists last season. His impressive form has attracted the attention of the Saudi Public Investment Fund (PIF), which has been given permission to discuss personal terms with the Portuguese midfielder. However, Fernandes is under contract until 2026, and his sale is not guaranteed. According to The Sun, Ashworth is exploring alternatives, with Simons being a standout option.

The 21-year-old Dutch sensation showcased his talent at Euro 2024, scoring a stunning goal against England in the semi-final. Despite his efforts, the Netherlands were knocked out by Ollie Watkins' dramatic late winner. Simons enjoyed a successful loan spell at RB Leipzig last season, registering 10 goals and 15 assists in 43 appearances. With interest from Bayern Munich and RB Leipzig, Simons is a hot commodity. PSG, which re-signed him from PSV Eindhoven for just £5 million, now values the youngster at £70 million.

However, any potential deal with Manchester United is expected to be another loan with an option to buy. A loan deal would be financially beneficial for United, allowing them to comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules (PSR).

The Red Devils are also on the verge of completing the £34 million signing of Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee and closing in on a deal for Bayern Munich center-back Matthijs de Ligt. If United secure Simons, Erik ten Hag could soon have three new Dutch stars at his disposal.

PSG manager Luis Enrique has yet to decide on Simon's future, but the player prioritizes playing time. Versatile in his abilities, Simons can play as a winger on either flank or in the number 10 role, providing valuable cover for United.

With Fernandes’ future uncertain, Manchester United may need to act quickly to secure Simons' signature. As the transfer window heats up, fans eagerly await to see if the Red Devils will make a concrete move for the talented Dutchman in the coming weeks.
