According to PUNCH reports, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, has emphasized the importance of INEC's readiness for the upcoming governorship elections in Edo and Ondo states, as well as several pending bye-elections across the country.

Speaking at the induction retreat for new Resident Electoral Commissioners (RECs) in Lagos, Yakubu underscored the retreat's role in not only inducting new appointees but also reviewing and enhancing INEC's operational capabilities.

"Today's retreat is held against the background of forthcoming governorship elections in Edo State in the next 81 days and Ondo State in the 137 days," Yakubu stated.

"In addition, there are five pending bye-elections for various federal and state constituencies across the country, bringing the total of such elections to 14 since the inauguration of the national and state assemblies in June last year."

Looking ahead, Yakubu reminded the RECs of four major elections before the next general election in 2027, including the Anambra State Governorship election next year, the Ekiti and Osun State governorship elections in 2026, and the Area Council elections in the Federal Capital Territory.

Emphasizing the importance of training and equipping the new RECs, Yakubu stressed the need for the commission to focus on acquainting themselves with the processes and procedures, as well as leveraging the experience of veteran RECs to mitigate recurring challenges.

"In a well-organised retreat such as this one, there is always something new to learn. Upon reflection, there is also a new experience to share with colleagues. However, always bear in mind that the cardinal objective is improved service delivery," Yakubu said.
